As a tax accounting computer consultant you must be able
to bill out a set number of hours weekly to maintain cash flow. With such
a demand for your niche market, it sounds easy enough to maintain steady
work.
Everyone who begins independent consulting usually
envisions a full week of billable services. For many, that turn out may
not be the case as they grow their tax accounting computer consultant
business.
What Happens?
Initially your days as a tax accounting computer
consultant may be filled more with marketing and promoting than with
actual billable time. After a while, your client list grows and instead of
searching for work, it comes searching for you.
Yet often at this stage, the number of hours billed still
doesn't add up to what you would like. Where does the time go? There's a
few tricks of the trade that will help you maximize billable hours and
minimize hours required to run the business as a tax accounting computer
consultant.
Organization
First, review your basic organizational skills. Sure, you
know the technical side of being a tax accounting computer consultant, but
are you organized? Do you plan your day? Can you manage your time
effectively or perhaps you are sidetracked as the day goes on.
Begin to improve by making a list of tasks you want to
complete each day. Include in the list the approximate amount of time you
expect to spend with each task. As you end your day and begin to plan the
next, review your actions.
-
Was your estimated time frame correct?
-
Did you stay on track with your list, or did you
change your day mid-stream?
These areas can all be great time wasters, yet you will
say you were busy all day. That might be true, but were you busy at the
correct tasks?
Set Your Goals
Almost every tax accounting computer consultant has yearly
and monthly goals set. By taking it one step further, and committing to
paper weekly and daily goals, you will be amazed at how much more you can
accomplish.
As you begin each day, review those weekly goals to see
what you can do today to reach the goal. Many of us will have the attitude
that we can remember everything we need to do.
By having a written plan, your brain is free to network,
market, and do the work you want without being cluttered. Your tax
accounting computer consultant business will grow.
Time with Clients
Even when you are at work for your clients, don't forget
to continually be asking for referrals, and conversing with others about
your tax accounting computer consultant services. Word of mouth is the
best advertising around. Don't forget to use it at every opportunity.
