IT Support: What Are Your Responsibilities with Clients?
Providing IT support to your important clients is full of responsibilities. But which are really required to be part of your services?
1. Coordinate Telecommunications Solutions. When you are dealing with sweet spot clients, you will have to coordinate IT support with a local phone company – CLEC (competitive local exchange carrier) or ILEC (incumbent local exchange carrier). You’ll have to help clients get a leased line and also research which types of connections your clients will need. You will also probably have to give basic dial-up networking recommendations and coordinate tech support with ISPs for your long-term clients.
2. Get Ready to Test. As part of IT support, you will probably have to know about vertical industry-niched applications. You might bring the applications in yourself or your clients may already have them and want your firm to test and evaluate the application before they make the investment. Regardless, your job will be to evaluate how the application fits in with your clients’ sophisticated network.
3. Train the Guru … or the Masses. Your firm will have to be involved in training, no matter what. Sometimes the training may be formal end-user training involving small groups and new applications. The training can also be more informal and just be with the internal guru that everyone comes to with problems and questions. When you train the guru, you help the guru offer IT support for the others when it comes to simple tasks.
4. You Can Expect Disaster. You will need to be plan for disaster with IT support. This means you’ll have to check out the data backup system, antivirus software, power protection and security regularly along with engage in very proactive maintenance of systems.
You will be most valuable to customers with IT support when you have great problem-solving and strategic-planning skills. You have to be ready to help with everything that is IT related and organize a very specific list of IT support priorities.

Become an IT Consultant by Getting Training and Clients
Client recruitment and skills development should really be done simultaneously when you are on the road to become an IT consultant. Don’t take many months off to do training or you will find yourself unable to pay the bills. You NEED paying clients.
However, if you let six months pass and you neglect to keep technical skills sharp, you will eventually lose the ability to take on the high-end projects you need to survive.
Achieve a Balance
The average person that tries to become an IT consultant usually balances training and obtaining clients in a variety of ways. Some consultants might spend a couple days a month or weeks a year going to formal classroom training.
Many consultants also have lab systems that give them the ability to test and train in their offices so they can work with basic entry-level server hardware on a regular basis.

Look for More Prospects Like Your Best Clients
You want to determine the key characteristics of your current clients and find more clients just like them. Take your active client list and put it into a Microsoft Excel worksheet with columns. Enter the client name, their revenue for the last 12 months, then divide by 12 to find out the monthly income and find out who your most valuable clients are.
This exercise helps you figure out who your best clients are so you can decide who gets the best customer service, who is worth keeping as a client and who is REALLY paying the bills for your business as IT specialists.
Clients Go into Categories
Once you’ve done this, look at your best, most active customers and clients. Who falls into the following categories?
1. Micro small businesses – less than 10 systems;

VARs Worry about Growth in 2008
Many VARs worry that, despite predictions by experts that the industry and its businesses will grow in 2008, U.S. economic unrest will make the business climate difficult and may hinder growth.
The 2008 VARBusiness State of the Market research report interviewed 733 North American VARs in October and found that while 27 percent of them thought their business would grow by at least 15 percent in 2008, 43 percent only predicted growth of as low as 5 percent.
Some VARs stated that they are getting mixed message from the market in 2008 and are concerned about how the overall economy may inhibit business growth. Many feel it will depend on the location of their businesses and the surrounding industry along with their specialties and niche markets.
Nearly 43 percent of VARs surveyed thought that businesses might rein in their spending in 2008 to prepare for an unpredictable economy, particularly in the U.S. And 42 percent of the VARs asked thought the declining value of the U.S. dollar against virtually every other major currency could do some serious damage on the market.
On November 1, the U.S. dollar dropped to only 95 percents against the Canadian Loonie, which is the first instance in over 30 years that the value of the Canadian dollar was stronger than the American dollar.
On November 1, the U.S. Federal Reserve put $41 billion into the U.S. financial system, which is the largest amount put in since September 2001. Some of the U.S. government’s attempts to help the situation with tax cuts could help eliminate some of the VARs’ main concerns. Still, many feel the Federal Reserve is still not doing enough to truly foster business.
Many VARs also predicted that a possible recession was coming.

Computer Business News: New Trojan Found in Open Source
In computer business news, despite the great reputation open source has developed, new findings from Fortify Software have proven that even open source is susceptible to security breaches. A new type of Trojan was recently discovered called “build-process injection” that lets hackers put in malicious code into programs while they are being designed.
According to computer business experts, with this Trojan, hackers can replace source code waiting to be entered into the program with different versions, so the virus can start compromising the program before it even goes to testing.
As an example, the software might depend on external parts from the open source server. Those looking to attack the program could target the server or the DNS and send it to a malicious server. Symantec Encourages Solution Providers to Specialize
At its Partner Engage conference this past week in San Diego, Symantec announced a new program for solution providers. The “SMB Specialization for Partners” program offer s solution providers working with small businesses the opportunity to get new benefits.
Solution providers registered for the silver level in Symantec’s partner program just need to take on-line training courses in five areas and pass corresponding tests. Three areas are mandatory: Symantec Backup Exec 11d; Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 7.0 and Symantec Enterprise Protection 11.0. Solution providers can then choose two additional areas from a larger list. The training provided is all free of charge.
After completion of five specialty areas, solution providers gain a listing in Symantec’s on-line partner locator along with an SMB Specialist certificate, two free tech support incidents in a year, free not-for-resale items in their area of specialization, a mid-market account manager, sales help and other promotions.
Symantec spokespeople say they have created this program to make moving up within the program easier for solution providers. According to Randy Cochran, vice president of channel sales at Symantec, the program is a combination of current products and programs.

Extended Warranties and PCs
With notebook PCs in particular you should advise clients to buy the highest level of extended warranty coverage. Hard drive failure is less of a concern than the cost of replacing a broken LCD screen.
What Do Replacements Cost?
Notebook PC LCD screens are different depending on each particular computer. If your client needs to replace a monitor out of warranty for a regular desktop computer, typically there would be no problem, and he/she could do so for about $200 or $300.
